Octyl-α-ketoglutarate is a prolyl hydroxylases substrate which accumulates rapidly in cells with dysfunctional tricarboxylic acid cycle. Octyl-α-ketoglutarate also prevents succinate or fumarate mediated inhibition of prolyl hydroxylases.
